Use these essential oils to relieve your post-workout muscle aches and pain

Muscle aches are a sign that you pushed hard during your workout. The soreness typically lasts around two to three days. Even the slightest movement like getting up from a chair can be dreadfully painful. One way to ease the muscle soreness is to use essential oils in your massage rub.

Different essential oils have targeted relief – peppermint oil helps to soothe pain and release tension, while ginger oil and marjoram oil can ease muscle spasms. Find out which are the best oils that work to relieve sore muscles.

Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil has an active ingredient, menthol, that has a cooling effect to soothe your sore and tired muscles. At the same time, its analgesic properties help to reduce pain, pressure and tension.
To make your own massage oil, mix four to six drops of peppermint oil with one to two drops of a carrier oil like olive oil. A carrier oil reduces the potency of an essential oil, to prevent skin irritation. Not to worry, adding carrier oil does not interfere with the properties of an essential oil.

Lavender oil

This aromatic oil is known to be a relaxant with calming properties. When applied topically, lavender oil can reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Unlike other essential oils that require a ratio of carrier oil for dilution, you can apply lavender oil directly because its gentle on the skin. Try having a post-workout bath to ease your tired muscles – add 10 to 15 drops of lavender oil into your bathtub and soak the pain away.

Rosemary oil

With an earthy aroma, rosemary oil mainly targets inflammation. Rosemary oil contains an anti-inflammatory agent, carnosol. According to a study by the National Institute of Health, carnosol also has properties that can treat cancer. Rosemary oil and peppermint oil make a good massage rub. Make your massage rub in this ratio – three drops of rosemary oil with one to two drops of peppermint oil and two to three drops of a carrier oil, like olive oil or coconut oil.

Eucalyptus oil

Eucalyptus has analgesic properties, so it’s recommended for those suffering from muscle cramps as well as muscle injuries. Eucalyptus oil encourages blood flow by widening your blood vessels, thus speeding up muscle recovery.

Marjoram oil

Marjoram, also known as oregano, has many uses. Other than essential oil, it is used in soaps, as an antiseptic and as fresh herbs in food. Marjoram oil is great for relieving muscle spasms and joint stiffness, as it improves circulation and relaxes your muscles. Make your own massage rub with marjoram oil and massage the affected areas for five to 20 minutes.
